BI=DWH+applications....i get that nowadays a lot....and it is soooo fundamentally wrong.
I see Data Warehousing more and more as a very generic data service - for a certain degree independent of the sources - that can deliver required data in the correct format, with the actuality needed and the quality that is necessary to be able to work with it.
In that light you could say BI is nothing more than an application on the Data service. Other applications can run on it; data to third parties, co-making, Master Data Management, etc...
And 1 other thing...BI = Business Intelligence..but what the hell is business intelligence? It's becoming more and more a contagious term. Is does not mean squad anymore. An interesting approach is to call the Intelligence 'just another business proces'. Like a Tax authority that wants to intelligently search for people or organisations that should be investigated. You could say that the intelligence process is another part of the primary processes within Organisations (like the logistic process, the manufcaturing proces). I am convinced that Business Intelligence - on the corporate level - should be discussed in these terms....
I like to contemplate this a bit further be4 I write more about it...
